“Experiencing this book feels like sitting in a quiet corner with a trusted friend, having a conversation that affirms your faith in yourself and the world. Meera Lee Patel has taken the big, scary concept of fear and crafted a personal, yet universal love letter to it, made all the more beautiful by her ethereal, yet down-to-earth illustrations.”

“Meera Lee Patel is the real deal: philosopher, poet, artist, and emotion-driven intellectual. It can be so easy to let your fears rule your life without noticing it, and so hard to figure out how to stop doing it. Incredibly, this simple, beautiful book offers a real remedy. Patel does more than just lay out a problem and a solution; she takes you by the hand and helps you feel your way closer and closer to a life where you can finally breathe freely and experience the world the way you were born to do. When you’re done reading this book, somehow the whole world feels so much more exciting and welcoming. I love this book so much it hurts!“

”You find certain books and certain books find you. Consider this the latter. Meera makes fear that kid you thought was too cool to be your friend, but turned out to be more like you than you could have imagined. My Friend Fear is a beautiful, visual journey into your mind and heart with a very gentle and generous narrator.“

”Meera Lee Patel has this ability to take us through some of our deepest and darkest feelings so we emerge on the other end feeling full and at peace. When Meera writes about fear, she does so in a way that feels like a warm hug, a silent nod from a friend, a soft whisper that she’s been there too, and a jubilant shout that she’s here for you now and always."

In a world that feels increasingly gloomy, this book wants to make you happy.

These days it seems like every time we pick up our phones or strike up a conversation, we’re hit with grim news, stressed status updates, and cynical gripes about the future. - Find a good news story from this week.

      - Fill a box with treats and positive notes, then send it to a friend.

      - Who do you take for granted? Tell them how much they mean to you.

      - Think of the kindest thing someone’s done for you—how can you pay it forward?

Every page of this creative journal focuses on the bright spots we overlook in every day, and will inspire you pass these simple joys on to the people who inhabit your little corner of the world. With infectious charm and delightful hand-illustrations, Emily Coxhead challenges you to dispel with your grumpiness and recognize the helpers (“Everyday Heroes”) in your area, leave an encouraging note for a stranger having a bad day, or ask yourself what you can do to share some positivity.

      Description
From the bestselling author of Yes Man, a hilarious and pitch-perfect look at the rudeness that’s all around us—where it comes from, how it affects us, and what we can do about it

You’re not just imagining it: People are getting more and more rude - from cutting in line, gabbing on their phones and clipping their nails on public transportation, to hurling epithets on Twitter and in real life (including a certain President who does both). And the worst part is that it’s contagious, leading reasonably courteous people to stoop to new lows in order to respond to the ever-coarsening encounters we face every day.

In this engaging and illuminating new book, bestselling author and all-around curious guy Danny Wallace looks at the reasons behind the rudeness, and what we can do to stop it. His quest to stop the madness includes interviews with neuroscientists, psychologists, NASA scientists, politicians, and other experts. He joins a Radical Honesty group, talks to LA drivers about road rage, and confronts his own online troll in a pub—all to better understand the scourge that’s turning normal people into bullies, tantruming toddlers, trolls, and other types of everyday monsters.

Want to be part of the solution? Let Danny Wallace be your smart and funny guide.

      Description
A practical guide to spotting, avoiding, and outsmarting people with high-conflict personality disorders, from an expert in conflict management and mediation.

Do you know someone whose emotions flip-flop from one moment to the next? Do they seem suspicious or jealous of others or antagonize you for no reason? You might be dealing with a high-conflict personality.

5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life is about people who are beyond difficult. When a high-conflict personality coincides with one of five common personality disorders—Borderline, Narcissistic, Paranoid, Antisocial, or Histrionic—they lash out in dangerous extremes of emotion and aggression. High-conflict personalities can seem charming and trustworthy for years, until one day they verbally attack you, attempt to ruin your reputation, or even threaten you with physical harm. HCPs blame everyone but themselves for their difficulties in life, and once they decide to target you, they’re hard to shake.

Bill Eddy, a law professor with extensive experience as a conflict mediator and therapist, will teach you to protect yourself from these attacks. With helpful anecdotes and expert advice, Eddy explains the warning signs of each high-conflict personality and how to avoid them using easy, proven conflict management methods and mediation techniques. With 5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life you’ll learn to safely manage or break free from a relationship with an HCP and safeguard your reputation and personal life in the process.

      Description
Fresh advice for becoming a lifelong learner. Hint: Think small.

Forget spending 10,000 hours in the pursuit of perfecting just one thing, à la Malcolm Gladwell. The true path to success and achievement lies in the pursuit of perfecting lots and lots of small things—what Robert Twigger calls micromasteries.

Combining positive psychology, neuroscience, self-help and more, this delightfully illuminating book encourages us to circumvent all the reasons we “can’t” learn and grow (we’re too busy, it’s too complicated, we’re not experts, we didn’t start when we were young)—by tackling small, satisfying skills.

Wish you were a seasoned chef? Learn to make a perfect omelette. Dream of being a racecar driver? Perfect a handbrake turn. Wish you could draw? Make Zen circles your first challenge. These small, doable tasks offer a big payoff—and motivate us to keep learning and growing, with payoffs that include a boost in optimism, confidence, memory, cognitive skills, and more.

Filled with surprising insights and even a compendium of micromastery skills to try yourself, this engaging and inspiring guide reminds us of the simple joy of learning—and opens the door to limitless, lifelong achievement, one small step at a time.

Micromasteries presented in the book (with illustrations) include: Learn How to Climb a Rope, Surf Standing Up, Talk for Fifteen Minutes about Any Subject, Bake Artisan Bread, Juggle Four Balls, Learn to Read Japanese in Three Hours, and more.

      Description
Simple and easy meditation techniques to help us have less fear, especially when times get tough - from the author of Natural Meditation.

Everywhere you look, life can look hard, complicated and even scary at times. How do we navigate through the confusion and fear, so that we can have peace of mind?

Dean Sluyter, author and meditation teacher for more than 45 years, offers an antidote to a fear-filled life: natural meditation. Expanding on the techniques he described in his popular book Natural Meditation, Sluyter shows how fear plays a major role in our lives, and when we let fear control our thoughts and actions we end up worsening our experience. The methods many people use to try to calm their fear - such as avoidance, alcohol and drugs, overeating and procrastination - end up creating more negativity, and therefore more fear.

Now, in Fear Less, Sluyter shows us that simple practices that we can perform immediately can have a major impact on our daily lives and our futures. Instead of complicated meditation methods that leave readers frustrated and vowing that they can’t meditate, Sluyter shows how meditation is one of the most natural acts that we can do, and in fact we meditate daily without even knowing we do. Becoming aware of this state of natural meditation allows us to direct our thoughts in different ways, and to have deeper experiences of life. When we do this, we can release much of the fear we hold on to, allowing us to live a less-fear-based life, filled with more meaning and joy.

“Trying to be fearless often becomes yet another thing to fail at, but if you can just fear less, peace is well within reach. This book is your best guide for achieving that. Dean Sluyter’s kind, accessible tone talks with you, so you always feel he is by your side as you make the journey.”
—Mark Goulston, M.D., author of Get Out of Your Own Way and Just Listen

“Om meets Wheeeeeee! Sluyter careens merrily from the Buddha to Willie Nelson, from prison stories to The Wizard of Oz, but it all leads us—step by practical, loving step—toward a life of peace. Who knew that learning how not to be freaked out could be so much fun?”
—Michael Kane, author of Heal Your Broken Heart

“As a recovering alcoholic and not-so-recovered depressed person, I’ve long been aware that mindfulness would be helpful to my life, but it’s just so intimidating. Not so with Sluyter, who pairs concrete suggestions with a no-pressure attitude that makes this book feel like it’s written by a really smart friend. He also shows how to incorporate the techniques into other programs of recovery—a rare but crucially important component. You’ll want to revisit Sluyter’s wisdom again and again.”
—Katie MacBride, journalist, author of “Ask Katie” recovery advice column

“In his friendly, easygoing style, Dean Sluyter shows how to surf even the biggest waves of powerful emotions. A delightful and necessary guide to staying sane in these ’interesting times.’”
—Lyn Genelli, marriage and family therapist, author of Death at the Movies

“Dean Sluyter has written a beautiful book that shows us how to navigate the free-floating anxiety of everyday fears. He shows us, with insight and humor, how to access the deep silence that is available to everyone. Fear Less is rich with inspiration and practices that lead to a more unobstructed view of reality. It is a book to be enjoyed over and over again.”
—Edward Viljoen, author of Ordinary Goodness and The Power of Meditation

“I especially like the lessons Dean draws from his experiences teaching in prison. I’ve had the privilege of going behind bars with him and have witnessed his transformative work there. If those men can come out of fear and rage, anyone can.”
—Lama Willa Miller, Ph.D., founder of Natural Dharma Fellowship, author of Everyday Dharma

“Dean Sluyter wields his pithy wit and profound wisdom like a laser light, pointing directly to the truth we need to embrace: fear doesn’t have to own us any longer. Using various forms of exquisitely simple meditation techniques, the author doesn’t just point the way—he takes our hand and gently leads us. Dean equips us with the tools necessary to slay the tyrant that holds us captive in the dungeon of our own making. The dungeon is our mind and the tyrant is fear. Read Fear Less—it will help you set yourself free!”
