Dragons vs Firefighters vs the Phoenix. The scorching fantasy sequel to Smoke Eaters.

With ex-firefighter Cole Brannigan in command of the Smoke Eaters, the dragon menace is under control. Thanks to non-lethal Canadian tech, the beasts are tranquilized and locked up, rather than killed. But for Tamerica Williams, this job filled with action and danger, has become tediously routine.

When a new threat emerges, a legendary bird of fire – the Phoenix – it’s the perfect task for Williams. But killing the Phoenix just brings it back stronger, spreading fire like a plague and whipping dragons into a frenzy. Will it prove to be too much excitement, even for adrenalin-junkie Williams?

File Under: Fantasy [ Smoke Em | Catch and Release | Fire Bird | Arson About ]

      Story Locale: Near-future USA

Series Overview: When dragons emerged from the earth to wreak havoc across the USA, a dedicated team was formed to deal with them: the Smoke Eaters.
SEAN GRIGSBY is a professional firefighter in central Arkansas, where he writes about lasers, aliens, and guitar battles with the Devil when he’s not fighting dragons. He grew up on Goosebumps books in Memphis, Tennessee, and hosts the Cosmic Dragon podcast.

“Grigsby’s pulse-pounding sequel to Smoke Eaters is a worthy successor that expands on the series’ already strong foundation of vivid action and meticulous worldbuilding… vibrantly imagined characters who ring with authenticity, and firefighter Grigsby knows just how to pull readers into scenes full of smoke and flame. Readers will delight in this fresh take on action fantasy.”
      – Publishers Weekly

“Starting with its title, Ash Kickers, tells you exactly what type of ride you’re in for then delivers on that promise with a story that hits like a Skyrim meets Ghostbusters battle royale. In it, you can almost feel Grigsby’s glee as he mixes together supersized heroics, mythic creatures, snappy dialogue, and furious fight scenes to form a narrative that reads like a passionate homage to the action blockbusters we all grew up watching.”
      – Evan Winter, author of The Rage of Dragons

“The fires burn hotter and the action is more furious on our second visit to this unusual urban fantasy universe.”
      – B&N Sci Fi & Fantasy Blog

“This book is instinctively and perceptively created and a joy to read. This has been a genuine pleasure to join Tamerica and her team and I look forward to more.”
      – Geek Syndicate

      Praise for Sean Grigsby

“An ingenious premise that Grigsby delivers on with intelligence and style. Smoke Eaters is a treat!”
      — Jason M Hough, New York Times Bestseller

“I love dragon stories in which the dragons are real monsters, laying waste to everything around them; and I love novels with protagonists who aren’t callow young adults learning that they’re chosen ones. Smoke Eaters has terrific dragons, and a hero with some miles and experience on him, plus great writing and a wicked sense of humor. I flew through it.”
      – Alex Bledsoe, author of The Hum and the Shiver and Burn Me Deadly

“Sean Grigsby has conceived what promises to be a brilliant and harrowing series. Dragons have returned, bringing fire, revenant spirits and ash in their wake. Cole Brannigan, a grizzled no nonsense fire-fighter, is there to stand in their way. Profane and exhilarating, filled with unforgettable characters and scorching action, Smoke Eaters is an amazing mix of adventure, fantasy, and science-fiction. Grigsby is an electrifying new voice sounding out over the wraith-haunted land.”
      – John Hornor Jacobs, award-winning author of Southern Gods and The Incorruptibles

“I’ve been waiting for a book like this for years. Original, exciting, Smoke Eaters is a red-hot page-turner.”
      – Adam Christopher, author of Empire State and Made to Kill

Smoke Eaters is a thrilling, exciting, funny and strangely heart-warming book, and Grigsby’s experience as a firefighter shines through on every page, lending grit and realism to this rollicking ride of a tale in which firefighters become dragon-slayers. It’s exactly as bonkers – and as brilliant – as you’d expect and I look forward to more from this author.”
      – Anna Stephens, author of Godblind

“This smoking debut is a shot of adrenaline to the urban fantasy genre. Grigsby’s knowledge of firefighting combined with hot dragon action and blistering humor create an irresistible romp of a read.”
      – Jaye Wells, USA Today Bestselling author of the Prospero’s War series

“A fun, fast, foul-mouthed thrill ride with more than its share of real surprises and pathos.”
      – Spencer Ellsworth, author of A Red Peace

“Put your helmet on! Grit, grease, and fast-paced futuristic action, complete with hardbitten women throwing energy boomerangs while speeding on motorcycles, makes this a riveting ride.”
      – Cat Rambo, Nebula nominee and president of SFWA

“High octane and hard hitting. Daughters of Forgotten Light is exactly what I want from sci-fi: badass women getting it done… with unapologetic grindhouse glam.”
      – KC Alexander, author of Necrotech and Mass Effect: Andromeda: Nexus Uprising

An outcast magician must risk his body and mind to save the world from horrifying demons, in the heart-pounding epic fantasy sequel to The Traitor God.

Tyrant magus Edrin Walker destroyed the monster sent by the Skallgrim, but not before it laid waste to Setharis, and infested their magical elite with mind-controlling parasites. Edrin’s own Gift to seize the minds of others was cracked by the strain of battle, and he barely survives the interrogation of a captured magus. There’s no time for recovery though: a Skallgrim army is marching on the mountain passes of the Clanhold. Edrin and a coterie of villains race to stop them, but the mountains are filled with gods, daemons, magic, and his hideous past. Walker must stop at nothing to win, even if that means losing his mind. Or worse…

“A wicked sense of humor and a cast of flawed but striving-for-good characters keeps this mid-series entry from getting too grimdark.”
      – B&N Sci Fi & Fantasy Blog

“Sword-swinging action, virulent and explosive magic, and a host of quirky and entertaining characters… Johnston depicts a beautiful and lavish world that is a feast for the imagination.”
      – Grimdark Magazine

“Cameron Johnston delivers again!… The Age of Tyranny is a series that should be on the top of everybody’s pile to read.”
      – Dark Side Reads

“If you enjoy bloody, highly tactical magic battles, a slow burn demonic history reveal, and a grumpy and relatable jerk who you can’t help but root for despite his flaws, God of Broken Things is your jam.”
      – The Fantasy Hive

“The end result is that Johnston delivers a kick-in-the nuts, edgy, and dark book that excites on every level.”
      – New York Journal of Books

“An assured and complex debut novel with a main protagonist of questionable loyalty and morals that, despite yourself, you can’t help but love. It’s not often you come across a fresh voice and a fresh take on magic, but The Traitor God gives both. Moments of absolute horror sit cheek by jowl with humour of the blackest kind and some of the monstrous creations in this book are nauseatingly wonderful. After a slightly slow start I found it increasingly difficult to put this book down. I dearly hope we get to see more of Magus Edrin Walker in future books.”
      Anna Stephens, author of Godblind

“From the frantic opening page, The Traitor God grabs you and doesn’t let go. Facing Gods, monsters, and a magic elite that wants him dead, Edrin Walker’s return to Setharis is a noirish romp packed with action and laced with black humour, and marks Cameron Johnston as a real name to watch in the epic fantasy genre.”
Neil Williamson, author of The Moon King

“Cameron Johnston is an exciting new voice in fantasy. His writing has a dark sense of humour and his debut is bursting with imagination and wonders. Fantastic stuff!”
Stephen Aryan, author of the Age of Darkness trilogy

“High magic and low lives collide in The Traitor God, one part street-level procedural and two parts an urban magic apocalypse, this is fantasy walking tall and carrying a big stick.”
Gavin G Smith, author of Age of Scorpio and The Bastard Legion

“Visceral and gripping fantasy, horribly and hugely enjoyable.”
Anna Smith Spark, author of The Court of Broken Knives

“The Traitor God by Cameron Johnston is part murder mystery, part detective story, and all fantasy that’s full of magic, shady villains and even shadier heroes. A hugely enjoyable tale and definitely a 2018 debut to look out for. Marvellous stuff.”
Edward Cox, author of The Relic Guild Trilogy

“Classic sword & sorcery with a wickedly blood-soaked grimdark twist.“
Peter McLean, author of Priest of Bones and the Burned Man series

“Epic fantasy meets hardboiled noir, with a foul-mouthed, seen -it-all narrator you won’t soon forget.”
      Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog

“I’m looking forward to seeing who and what Walker kicks in the balls in the sequel. If you enjoy clever gray characters, gritty but interesting worlds, and creepy magic, this book is for you.”
      Fantasy Hive

“There’s a wonderful coarseness and vivacity to the world Johnston has created, and the magic and monsters featured are as horrific as they are fascinating. The finale is truly epic, and about as thrilling as they come.”
      Alan Brenik

”This is a tightly written, believable world, one which will make you sit up and take notice. It’s not pretty, by any means, but it’ll seep off the page and into your pores. It’s snappy, tautly written prose kept me turning pages until far too late in the night."
      Sci-Fi and Fantasy Reviews

“From the frantic opening page, The Traitor God grabs you and doesn’t let go. Edrin Walker’s return to Setharis is a noirish romp packed with action and laced with black humour, and marks Cameron Johnston as a real name to watch in the epic fantasy genre.”

But when she activates it, reality warps, destroying the space station and everyone aboard. The AI Gods who rule the galaxy declare her work heretical, and Yasira is abducted by their agents. Instead of simply executing her, they offer mercy – if she’ll help them hunt down a bigger target: her own mysterious, vanished mentor. “This is first and foremost a thoroughly entertaining novel…  The convincing setting, engaging characters and an artfully devised plot all combine to give these particular fantasy themes a vivid freshness.”
      – Juliet E. McKenna for Interzone Magazine

The Resurrectionist of Caligo plays with genre in an intriguing and clever way. There are horror elements mixed with fantasy, colonial critique, and class commentary, all blended into a book that is a pleasure to read.”
      – Tor.com

“I loved the characters, the world-building, the tight plot and the emotional payoff. One of my favorites of the summer!”
      – Patrice Sarath, author of The Sisters Mederos and Fog Season

“A striking portrayal of the society from the gutters to the royal palace, as gaudy and vivid as a Hogarth print in its writing about the underbelly of society and living there. The characters were utterly human, trying to do their best in a world which was far from perfect, and the conclusion left me wanting more.”
      – Genevieve Cogman, author of  The Invisible Library

The Resurrectionist of Caligo is gothic fantasy in the extreme. Its pages are packed with fog shrouded streets, eerie blood magic, grave-robbing, court intrigue, bitter rivalries, shattered hearts, faded dreams, elegant clothing, and perhaps the strangest literary mushrooms since Alice in Wonderland.”
      – Dan Stout, author of Titanshade

“The world of Resurrectionist is tantalisingly real, the prose is breathlessly witty, and the characters are impossible to avoid loving (or loathing, in a few noteworthy cases). If you’ve ever called yourself a goth, played 7th Sea, or wished that Pride & Prejudice had magical ink-bees in it, you need this book.”
      – Tyler Hayes, author of The Imaginary Corpse

“Trimoboli and Zaloga skillfully deliver a debut that uses alchemy to combine scientific logic, magical elements, and a whodunnit that gives off Sherlock Holmes-ian, gaslamp vibes. The novel is artfully written from dual perspectives but with one fluid style, and will appeal to readers of sf, fantasy, and historical mystery, or those who just can’t choose.”
      – BookList

“Wendy Trimboli and Alicia Zaloga build their world with meticulous care, and the plotting is rich and cunning…a story and characters to savour, in a world painted in vivid detail.”
      – SFX Magazine

“Sells itself on a single sentence.”

Strange Hate Antisemitism, Racism and the Limits of Diversity Keith Kahn-harris

Keith Kahn-Harris argues that the controversy over antisemitism today is a symptom of a growing “selectivity” in anti-racism caused by a failure to engage with the challenges that diverse societies pose.

How did antisemitism get so strange? How did hate become so clouded in controversy? And what does the strange hate of antisemitism tell us about racism and the politics of diversity today?

Life-long anti-racists accused of antisemitism, life-long Jew haters declaring their love of Israel…Today, antisemitism has become selective. Non-Jews celebrate the “good Jews” and reject the “bad Jews”. And its not just antisemitism that’s becoming selective, racists and anti-racists alike are starting to choose the minorities they love and hate.

In this passionate yet closely-argued polemic from a writer with an intimate knowledge of the antisemitism controversy, Keith Kahn-Harris argues that the emergence of strange hatreds shows how far we are from understanding what living in diverse societies really means.

Strange Hate calls for us to abandon selective anti-racism and rethink how we view not just Jews and antisemitism, but the challenge of living with diversity.
Keith Kahn-Harris is a writer and sociologist. He is senior lecturer at Leo Baeck College, an associate lecturer at Birkbeck College and runs the European Jewish Research Archive at the Institute for Jewish Policy Research. His books include: Denial: The Unspeakable Truth (2018) Uncivil War: The Israel Conflict in the Jewish Community (2014), Judaism: All That Matters (2012) and (with Ben Gidley) Turbulent Times: The British Jewish Community Today.

“I can’t be alone in feeling immense gratitude for this provocative, judicious and ultimately generous book. I wish everyone currently trapped inside an echo chamber would come offline and read it. Strange Hate reveals how we’re all too often selective anti-racists, loving some members of a group only to hate the rest in the name of politics rather than prejudice. But Kahn-Harris not only identifies the persistent problems and blind spots to have bedevilled anti-racism, he dares to imagine practical solutions to them as well. Could there be a more timely intervention? Even if you don’t agree with every move he makes, you’ll surely want to applaud him for writing it.”
Dr Devorah Baum, author of Feeling Jewish (A Book For Just About Anyone)

“Kahn-Harris performs the essential task of providing an entire glossary of terms of reference for the latest evolution of the most ancient hatred. This is a concise and elegantly written guide to antisemitism in the 21st century which excels in being both humorous and deadly serious at the same time. Essential to understanding how Western society must confront racism in the age of Trump and Corbyn.”
Anshel Pfeffer, author of Bibi: The Turbulent Life and Times of Benjamin Netanyahu

“I try and read everything Keith Kahn-Harris writes on British Jews and this intelligent book, on how anti-racists have lost their way, and how they can find their way back, is no exception.”
Ben Judah, author This Is London

“Few issues have been more vexing for today’s left than the question of antisemitism. Jews have many different definitions and approaches to the issue, and non-Jews pick and chose which Jews to follow on it. Unlike other books, Strange Hate offers no clearcut definition of antisemitism, but instead shows how this question unsettles the Left’s own notions of liberation, oppression, hatred, and tolerance.”

Stolen How to Save the World from Financialisation Grace Blakeley

A must-read polemic about why the ’recovery’ from the 2007-08 crash mostly benefited the 1%, and how democratic socialism can save us from a new crash and climate catastrophe.

For decades, it has been easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.

In the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, booming banks, rising house prices and cheap consumer goods propped up living standards in the rich world. Thirty years of rocketing debt and financial wizardry had masked the deep underlying fragility of finance-led growth, and in 2008 we were forced to pay up.

The decade since has witnessed all kinds of morbid symptoms, as all around the rich world, wages and productivity are stagnant, inequality is rising, and ecological systems are collapsing.

Stolen is a history of finance-led growth and a guide as to how we might escape it. We’ve sat back as financial capitalism has stolen our economies, our environment and even the future itself. Now, we have an opportunity to change course. What happens next is up to us.

“Grace Blakeley is one of the sharpest of a new generation of economic and political thinkers, with a gift for clearly and eloquently explaining how we got to the crisis point we’re in, and why only radical transformation will get us out. McMindfulness How Mindfulness Became the New Capitalist Spirituality Ronald Purser

A lively and razor-sharp critique of mindfulness as it has been enthusiastically co-opted by corporations, public schools, and the US military.

Mindfulness is now all the rage. From celebrity endorsements to monks, neuroscientists and meditation coaches rubbing shoulders with CEOs at the World Economic Forum in Davos, it is clear that mindfulness has gone mainstream. Some have even called it a revolution.

But what if, instead of changing the world, mindfulness has become a banal form of capitalist spirituality that mindlessly avoids social and political transformation, reinforcing the neoliberal status quo?

In McMindfulness, Ronald Purser debunks the so-called “mindfulness revolution,” exposing how corporations, schools, governments and the military have co-opted it as technique for social control and self-pacification. A lively and razor-sharp critique, Purser busts the myths its salesmen rely on, challenging the narrative that stress is self-imposed and mindfulness is the cure-all.

If we are to harness the truly revolutionary potential of mindfulness, we have to cast off its neoliberal shackles, liberating mindfulness for a collective awakening.
Ronald Purser is a Professor of Management at San Francisco State University. His essays and cultural criticism have appeared in the Huffington Post, Salon, Alternet and Tricycle magazine. His viral article, “Beyond McMindfulness”, opened the floodgates for the mindfulness backlash. His recent books include the Handbook of Mindfulness: Culture, Context and Social Engagement and the Handbook of Ethical Foundations of Mindfulness. Dr. Purser began his Buddhist training beginning in 1981 at the Tibetan Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, California and is an ordained Buddhist teacher in the Korean Zen Taego order. He is co-host of Mindful Cranks podcast and is a regular speaker and guests on radio shows and podcasts. He lives with his family and dog in San Francisco, CA.

“In this insightful book, Ron Purser has evaluated the strengths and weakness of the mindfulness movement, while clearly showing the way to cultivate authentic mindfulness that liberates us from the true causes of individual and collective suffering.”
      B. Alan Wallace, President, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies

“Far from being either a harmless form of New Age self-indulgence or meditation dressed up as a medicalized antidote to the ubiquitous stresses of modern life, Ron Purser sees the mindfulness movement as epitomizing a malignant trend of contemporary Western individualism, one that is blinding us to the social problems of inherent in neoliberalism and capitalism, providing an anodyne where what is needed is rigorous analysis and political action.”
      - Barry Magid, author of What’s Wrong With Mindfulness

McMindfulness makes an important critique of self-centered mindfulness and points us towards a new  vision for real social change.”
Christopher Titmuss, author of The Political Buddha

“Ron Purser cuts through the comforting New Age jargon used to promote mindfulness, enabling us to distinguish between the practice and its marketing.”
Richard Payne, Institute of Buddhist Studies

“Timely and incisive…Purser reveals how mindfulness became a vast industry, promising to cure us of a growing range of psychological ailments, and simultaneously propping up the political and economic system that generates them.”
      — William Davies, author of Nervous States and The Happiness Industry

“If you are wondering about whether mindfulness is really a panacea for all our problems, this is the book to read.”  — David Loy, author of Money, Sex, War and Karma

”Provocatively illustrates how mindfulness has been hijacked by corporate interests, turned into an opiate of the masses, and how we can radically rethink the meaning of mindfulness in contemporary life.”
      — Dr. Steven Stanley, School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University

“Spiky, witty, meticulously researched and thoroughly engaging, McMindfulness is the best assessment of ‘Mindfulness’ to date.”
      — Manu Bazzano, author of Zen and Therapy: Heretical Perspectives and editor of After Mindfulness: new Perspectives on Psychology and Meditation

“A much needed wake-up call to the dark side of mindfulness-based practices…a must-read.”
      – Richard King, Professor of Buddhist and Asian Studies, University of Kent.

”Just the right book at just the right time…May it help turn the tide of western ‘spirituality’ toward a genuine model of personal and social health.”
      — Glenn Wallis, author of A Critique of Western Buddhism and Director of Insight Seminars
