      Description

After best-sellingRolling Stone writer Dave Marsh was invited by Pete Townshend to write a history of legendary band the Who, he spent three years investigating and researching their story. The result is the first in-depth biography of the band, discarding the myth and nonsense which has become so much a part of the usual Who coverage. Before I Get Old tells the story of not one but six personalities – guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, drummer Keith Moon and singer Roger Daltrey plus their original managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. It describes the group’s origins in the steamy nightlife of London, charts their meteoric rise to fame, and describes the creation of the rock operaTommy which turned them into superstars. Here is the pathos, the laughter, the crazy world they worked in, the drugs, the destruction, the vandalism, the debts, the multi-million-dollar tours, and of course the music. In short, this story contains every inch of the fascinating, shocking, hilarious, and provocatively relevant material that makes up the Who and their wild lives and careers. Before I Get Old is essential reading, an exhaustive study of an exhausting band, who have always lived up to their legend.

      Description

A business biography of pioneering Nova Scotian entrepreneur Louis Deveau.

Cultivating Success is the remarkable story of a remarkable man.

Louis Deveau was born in the Acadian village of Salmon River, Digby County, NS, in the early years of the Great Depression. He inherited his father's work ethic and his mother's entrepreneurial flair, soon pioneering the creation of the commercial crab industry—now the second-largest fishery in Atlantic Canada. That work put him on the front lines of the industry he would transform over a lifetime: the seaweed business.

At forty-nine, Louis incorporated Acadian Seaplants Limited (ASL), and doggedly grew the company by capitalizing on research and development innovations. Today, ASL employs hundreds of people in more than a dozen nations, keeps a research staff of about fifty, and exports a wide range of products to over eighty nations worldwide.

With dozens of black and white photos and two colour inserts, this comprehensive biography tells the story of a visionary whose determination to build a successful business in Nova Scotia, and whose commitment to church, family, community, and Acadian culture transformed ASL into a world-leading, research- and technology-driven juggernaut.

      Description

An affordable pocket introduction to the most constructive and creative influence on English taste between the wars

The Bloomsbury Group was a union of friends who transformed British culture with their approach to art, design and society. The group aimed to rebel and challenge what they felt were the religious, artistic, social and sexual taboos of Victorian England. Together they created a revolution in British style that resonates with contemporary painters, writers, actors, designers, fashion editors and publishers.

This book explores the impact of Bloomsbury personalities on each other, as well as their legacy to the 21st century. Author and acclaimed Bloomsbury expert Frances Spalding demonstrates how this network of artists, lovers and patrons recorded one another obsessively in both words and images. She presents 20 fascinating biographies, all of which are illustrated with paintings and intimate photographs created by members of the group. Highlighted in her revealing account are Virginia and Leonard Woolf, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Duncan Grant, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Roger Fry, J.M. Keynes, Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington.

'Just amazing and inspirational' Jeremy Vine

Can you imagine being trapped inside your own body? Able to see and hear everything going on around you but unable to move or speak - the blink of an eye your only way of communicating.

Fell-runner and fun-loving mother-of-three Kate Allatt's life was torn apart when what appeared to be a stress-related headache exploded into a massive brainstem stroke leading to locked-in syndrome. Totally paralysed, she became a prisoner inside her own body. Doctors warned her family she would never walk, talk or swallow or lead a normal life again.

But they didn't know Kate. The words no and never were not in her vocabulary.

With the help of her best friends and family she drew on every ounce of her runner's stamina and determination to make a recovery that amazed medical experts. Using a letter chart, Kate blinked the words "I will walk again". Soon she was moving her thumb and communicating with the world via Facebook. Eight months after her stroke, Kate said goodbye to nurses, walked out of hospital and returned home to learn how to run again.

This is the story of her incredible journey.

      Description
A pioneering marine biologist takes us down into the deep ocean to understand bioluminescence–the language of light that helps life communicate in the darkness–and what it tells us about the future of life on Earth.

Edith Widder’s childhood dream of becoming a marine biologist was almost derailed in college, when complications from a surgery gone wrong caused temporary blindness.  A new reality of shifting shadows drew her fascination to the power of light – as well as the importance of optimism.

As her vision cleared, Widder found the intersection of her two passions in oceanic bioluminescence, a little-explored scientific field within Earth’s last great unknown frontier: the deep ocean. With little promise of funding or employment, she leaped at the first opportunity to train as a submersible pilot and dove into the darkness.

Widder’s first dive into the deep ocean, in a diving suit that resembled a suit of armor, took her to a depth of eight hundred feet. She turned off the suit’s lights and witnessed breathtaking underwater fireworks–explosions of bioluminescent activity. Concerns about her future career vanished. She only wanted to know one thing: Why was there so much light down there?

Below the Edge of Darkness takes readers deep into our planet’s oceans as Widder pursues her questions about one of the most important and widely used forms of communication in nature. In the process, she reveals hidden worlds and a dazzling menagerie of behaviors and animals, from microbes to leviathans, many never-before-seen or, like the legendary Giant Squid, never-before-filmed in its deep-sea lair. Alongside Widder, we experience life-and-death equipment malfunctions and witness breakthroughs in technology and understanding, all of it set against a growing awareness of the deteriorating health of our largest and least understood ecosystem.

A thrilling adventure story as well as a scientific revelation, Below the Edge of Darkness reckons with the complicated and sometimes dangerous realities of exploration. Widder shows us how when we push our boundaries and expand our worlds, discovery and wonder follow. These are the ultimate keys to the ocean’s salvation–and thus, our future on this planet.

Story Locale: Boston, Florida, Gulf of Mexico
      Bio
Edith Widder is an oceanographer, a marine biologist, and the co-founder, CEO, and senior scientist at the Ocean Research & Conservation Association, a non-profit organization where she is focusing her passion for saving the ocean into developing innovative technologies needed to preserve and protect the ocean’s most precious real estate—its estuaries. She has given three TED talks and been awarded a prestigious MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as well as the Explorer’s Club Citation of Merit and is the first recipient of the Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration established by the Marine Technology Society and the Society of Underwater Technology.

“Edith Widder’s story is one of hardscrabble optimism, two-fisted exploration, and groundbreaking research. She’s done things I dream of doing. I’d have wrapped my submersible, the Deepsea Challenger, in bacon if it would have lured the elusive giant squid from the depths. In Below the Edge of Darkness, Widder tells you how she did it.”—James Cameron

“My experience of exploring the deep ocean and its alien life with Edie Widder was fabulous. She enthralls us with many such stories in her book. I recommend it.”—Ray Dalio

“To shed light on a subject is what any scientific book should do. To go into it in depth without losing the reader is a harder task. Edith Widder’s subject is light itself—the manufacture of light by strange and eerie denizens of the deep sea—and her scintillating style is worthy of the topic. This is a book to delight the general reader while simultaneously informing the professional: a book of marvels, marvelously written.”—Richard Dawkins, New York Times bestselling author of The God Delusion

“Personal and page-turning, adventurous and awe-inspiring, Below the Edge of Darkness sparkles with the thrill of exploration and glows with an urgent plea for the future of our precious seas. Comparisons to Jacques Cousteau spring to mind as Edith Widder shares the profound journey of her life—one as unique and important as the unexplored realms of our very own planet.”—Juli Berwald, author of Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone

“‘Luminous’—the topic, the heroic journey, and the author herself. Dive in with Edith Widder, trailblazing scientist and explorer, as she reveals the galaxy of light and life in the universe below the surface of the sea, out-shining skeptical male colleagues with dignity, grace and a robust sense of humor.”—Sylvia Earle, National Geographic explorer in residence, founder of Mission Blue

PRE-ORDER THE ENTHRALLING INSIDE STORY OF THE THAI CAVE RESCUE

’The British divers are all heroes’ - Clive Cussler

’A case study in courage ’ - Ron Howard, Oscar-winning director of Apollo 13

’They were utterly alone inside the mountain, isolated from the rest of the world. They might as well have been on another planet…’

In July 2018, twelve boys and their football coach disappeared into Tham Luang Cave in Thailand.

Trapped miles beneath the surface, not even the Thai Navy SEALs had the skills to bring them to safety. With the floodwater rising rapidly, time was running out…

Any hope of survival rested on Rick Stanton, a retired Midlands firefighter with a living room full of homemade cave-diving equipment. As unlikely as it seemed, to those in the know, Rick and his partner, John Volanthen, were regarded as the A-team for exactly this kind of mission.

The Thai Cave Rescue was the culmination of a lifelong obsession, requiring every ounce of skill and ingenuity accumulated by Rick over a four decade pursuit of the unknown.

While the world held its breath, Rick, John and their assembled team raced against time in the face of near impossible odds. There was simply no precedent for what they were attempting to do…

In Aquanaut Rick reveals the real story of the cave rescue for the first time. And of a life lived without compromise in which any mistake could have been his last. It’s an edge-of-your-seat story of courage and conviction that will take you deep into the most remote and unforgiving places on the planet, told with humour, unflinching honesty, and a relentless drive for adventure.

THE RESCUE WATCHED BY THE WORLD

’The Thai cave rescue was phenomenally dangerous, and the work of true heroes’ - inews

“[The rescue] was fantastic, it really was…” - HRH Prince William

’If it was me stuck anywhere, the one person I would want to come and rescue me is Rick Stanton.’ - Alex Daw, Watch Commander, West Midlands Fire Service

’One of the great stories of our time’ - Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Oscar-winning co-director of Free Solo

’Rick Stanton is not the most domesticated of men’ - Sunday Telegraph
      Bio
Rick Stanton MBE GM served as a firefighter with the West Midlands Fire Service, but it was his ’hobby’ of cave-diving that consumed his time. He has quietly spent forty years exploring caves around the world, steadily building his unique skill set as he defied limits, pushed boundaries, and discovered parts of the earth that had never been seen before. Along the way, he and his dive partners became the ones to call for the most challenging cave rescue and recovery missions. In 2018, he found himself on the world’s stage when he and John discovered the Wild Boars alive, trapped inside Thailand’s flooded Tham Luang cave. Rick needed to rely on all the experiences and friendships he’d gathered along the way as he carefully planned and then successfully executed one of the most noteworthy rescue missions on record.

      —-
The hilarious, no holds barred autobiography from sporting legend and broadcaster Alan Brazil.

As Alan recounts tales from his extraordinary life, he relives the sporting occasions, radio broadcasts and famously long drinking sessions that have defined his career. He takes readers inside the talkSPORT studio for a behind-the-scenes view of his most memorable interviews, and talks for the first time about the on-pitch rivalries and dressing room debriefs of his footballing career.

With his typically outspoken and irreverent delivery, Alan shares everything from his thoughts on how the sports he loves have changed to his top tips for picking winners (and many losers) at Cheltenham. And he revels in wine-soaked jaunts in the South of France and late-night supermarket sweeps with Ray Parlour - if you can keep up.
