In this nautical update on the familiar childhood rhyme “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” an old sailor swallows a krill, which makes him ill, so he swallows a jellyfish to catch the krill, and a feeding frenzy begins! Young readers will love the cumulative rhyme, and grown-ups will appreciate the fresh take on an old favourite.

Claire Saxby was born in Melbourne, Australia, and grew up in Newcastle. Claire is the author of many books, and There Was an Old Sailor, illustrated by Cassandra Allen, won the 2011 Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Crystal Kite Member Choice Award (Australia and New Zealand Division).

Cassandra Allen was born and raised in Australia, and now lives in France. After moving to Europe, her career grew wings and she began illustrating children’s books, amongst other editorial work.

An aptly silly narrative and offbeat illustrations make this a successful new spin on an old classic.
Kirkus Reviews
