The definitive, bestselling account of the company that changed the way we talk, work, and live, updated for the twentieth anniversary of Google’s founding with analysis of its most recent bold moves to redefine the world—and its even more ambitious plans for the future.

In 1998, Moscow-born Sergey Brin and Midwest-born Larry Page dropped out of graduate school at Stanford University to, in their own words, “change the world” through a powerful search engine that would organize every bit of information on the Web for free. Based on scrupulous research and extraordinary access to the key playes at Google, this fast-moving narrative takes you inside the creation and growth of a fun-loving firm whose unorthodox ways have enabled it to challenge Microsoft’s dominance, shake up Wall Street, and rewrite the rules of advertising on the way to becoming a $160 billion behemoth.

The Google Story has been updated for this revised edition with material that takes readers behind the scenes of the latest Google news, including:

The excitement, controversy, and revolutionary potential of the company’s Waymo driverless car initiative

Updates on extraordinary developments emerging from Google’s “Moonshots” division, including kites that harness wind energy and high-flying balloons that deliver Internet service to the two-thirds of the world that doesn’t have it

How the company’s lawsuit against Uber sent the message to Silicon Valley that any company bold enough to steal Google’s intellectual property would face its wrath—powered by its virtually unlimited financial resources—in court

The growing threat of anti-trust challenges to the company’s global dominance, by regulators in the U.S. and overseas
