A Keats classic now available in a lap board book format!

Peter wants to learn to whistle so that his dog will come running right to him. He spends the day trying over and over again to whistle for Willie, and along the way, he finds that there is a whole vibrant and colorful neighborhood for him to run, draw, hop, and spin through.

Whistle for Willie has delighted young readers for decades with its striking illustrations and ability to capture the small excitements and wonders of everyday life. Now this Keats classic is in an oversized lap board book format, so a new generation of children and parents can rediscover it together.

STRONG BOARD BOOK SALES TRACK: Board books of Ezra Jack Keats classics including The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie (original board book), and Peter’s Chair have a combined net sales of over 200,000 copies.

CLASSIC STORIES IN LAP BOARD BOOK FORMAT: Penguin Young Readers has seen strong sales when reissuing classics in a lap board book format. Whistle for Willie will sit comfortably alongside lap board book editions of Corduroy and Good Night, Gorilla.

MORE LAP BOARD BOOKS ARE COMING: Viking is making its mark in this niche area of the market. We published lap board book editions of Llama Llama Red Pajama, Llama Llama Holiday Drama, and The Story of Ferdinand in Fall 2018, and we will publish Little Owl’s Night along with Whistle for Willie in Spring 2019.

BELOVED AND SEMINAL CHARACTER: Peter is a young black boy and the main character of six of Ezra Jack Keats’s picture books. Keats’s books featuring Peter are often praised for their casual diversity and positive representation of children of color.

CALDECOTT MEDAL-WINNING ARTIST: Ezra Jack Keats won the Caldecott Medal in 1963 for his work in The Snowy Day, which also features the same main character, Peter.

Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983) is the Caldecott Medal-winning author of The Snowy Day, which broke ground in 1962 as one of the first picture books for young children to portray a realistic, multi-cultural urban setting. Since its initial publication, The Snowy Day has come to be regarded as both a children’s classic and one of the most important picture books ever written/illustrated. Ezra Jack Keats’s legacy lives on in the popularity of his most famous character, Peter—the star of The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Peter’s Chair, A Letter to Amy, Goggles, and other books.
