Anniversary: The 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt’s birth is coming up in 2019.
Biography: Andrea Wulf’s Humboldt biography The Invention of Nature, released in 2015, became a bestseller and one of the New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year. The book won various prizes worldwide and significantly enhanced Humboldt’s name recognition in the English-speaking world.
Alexander von Humboldt (1769 - 1859): a Prussian geographer, naturalist, and explorer. Between 1799 and 1804, Humboldt travelled extensively to the Americas, exploring and describing them for the first time from a modern scientific point of view. His description of the journey was written up and published in an enormous set of volumes over 21 years. This landmark voyage has been hailed as “the scientific discovery of America.”
