Based on the hugely popular cover story about Steve Jobs in Fast Company in May 2012, this is the behind the scenes account of how Steve Jobs arguably became the most famous and visionary CEO in history—and it is now available as a Signal paperback.

Brent Schlender, one of the most respected journalists ever to cover Apple and Silicon Valley, has written about and reported on technology over the past three decades. In May 2012, Schlender’s and Tetzeli’s Fast Company cover story about Jobs, entitled “The Lost Tapes of Steve Jobs,” created a sensation in publications around the world. The narrative thrust of Becoming Steve Jobs is Job’s growth and evolution as a manager and leader of others, as an astute CEO, as a father and as a visionary with an unparalled sense of what consumers wanted—before they knew what they wanted themselves. But he didn’t start out with those skills. When he first left Apple in 1985 and struck out to form his own company, NeXT, he knew little about running a company, or holding to a budget, or developing successful products. It was during his years in the wilderness, unsuccessfully launching NeXT, and helping to revitalize Pixar, that he learned the skills that would make him so successful upon his return to Apple in 1996.

BRENT SCHLENDER worked for the Wall Street Journal for 10 years and as lead technology writer for Fortune for over two decades. He now contributes articles to Fast Company. Schlender covered Steve Jobs for over 25 years, and has written five Fortune cover stories about him. He has over 100 hours of tapes of his interviews with Jobs, many hours of which have never before been transcribed or published.

RICK TETZELI, a former deputy editor at Fortune, editor of Entertainment Weekly, and executive editor at Fast Company, has worked with Brent as his editor for over a decade.
