Celebrating the beauty of Vermont’s Shelburne Farms, a National Historic Landmark on the shores of Lake Champlain.

This book tells the story of Shelburne Farms, once a magnificent Gilded Age country estate conceived by America’s leading aristocrats of the day, Lila Vanderbilt and William Seward Webb. Built between 1886 and 1905, the houses and barns, designed by architect Robert H. Robertson, include Shelburne House, the Webbs’ stunning Shingle- and Queen Anne-style residence with a formal Italianate flower garden, and the Breeding Barn, which was the largest open-span wooden structure in America. Landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted planned the 4,000 acres of pastureland, woodlands, and trails.

Period photographs capture the Webbs’ original vision, while new photography showcases the splendid results of decades-long restoration. The property is now open to the public. Shelburne House, transformed into an inn, showcases many original paintings, furnishings, and decorative arts.

FOR THE GARDEN LOVER: Shelburne Farms’ formal garden designed by passionate gardener Lila Vanderbilt Webb, which has been recently restored, is one of the most beautiful private gardens on the East Coast.

FOR THE BACK-TO-THE-LAND ENTHUSIAST: The landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted conceived of the Webb estate as both a farm and park. Today composed of 1,400 acres of natural and designed outdoor spaces, walking trails, pastures, and massive Victorian domestic and farm architecture, this beautiful organic working farm and parkland on the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain is a popular travel destination.

SOUVENIR OF THE HISTORIC INN AND RESTAURANT AT SHELBURNE FARMS: The Webbs’ residence, Shelburne House, built in 1888, was the largest private domestic structure in Vermont at the time. Its award-winning farm-to-table restaurant is supplied by the property’s market garden. Shelburne Farms includes approximately twenty signature recipes including handcrafted pasta served with baby artichokes and sage cream; roasted rabbit with chanterelles, bacon, polenta croutons, and whole-grain mustard; and blue cornmeal johnnycake, with sweet-corn ice cream, raspberries, and raw honey.

100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL PARKS SYSTEM TO BE CELEBRATED IN 2016/17: Shelburne Farms has been designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Parks System. This year-long celebration will receive much press.

SHELBURNE FARMS WORKING FARM: The property’s farm is on a mission to create a healthy and sustainable food system that benefits us all. Similar to Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills, New York, these nonprofit agricultural centers are leaders in the field of increasing public awareness of healthy and seasonal food. Today, this nonprofit environmental education center makes its own cheddar cheese from their herd of purebred Brown Swiss cows as well as maple syrup, and produces pasture-raised beef, pork, and lamb, and pastured eggs. They also grow vegetables and herbs in their market garden.

Glenn Suokko, a designer and photographer, is the author of Simon Pearce: Design for Living.

Alec Webb is a family descendant and president of Shelburne Farms, today a charitable education organization.

Megan Camp is Shelburne Farms’ vice president and program director.
