'On Rape' is a visualisation of the origin of gender-based stereotypes and myths, as well as the failing structures of law and order, that continue to perpetuate rape culture. Abril collates and interweaves compiled testimonies, political proclamations, historical archives, popular and traditional beliefs, as well as society's structural failures to deal with sexual violence. To avoid feeding the systemic victim-blaming society, Abril switches the visual narrative from the survivors to the institutions, allowing her opportunity to address trans...

From the 1910s to the 1930s John Alinder photographed in his home village of Savasta in Sweden, portraying local people, the surrounding landscape and their way of life. His portraits are extraordinary - children placed on chairs, old ladies, people perched in trees, labourers and confirmation candidates; often depicted against a background of foliage and sprawling greenery penetrated by sunlight. The Alinder collection was 'discovered' in the 1980s when a curator found over 8,000 glass plates stacked away in a library basement.

Originally published in 1983 by Jonathan Cape, Sirkka Liisa Konttinen's Byker is recognised as a seminal body of work and a modern classic of photography. Konttinen documented a close knit community in Newcastle in an area that was her home for seven years and which was destined for wholesale redevelopment. The work gained national recognition as a key photographic account of a richly working class culture on the eve of its destruction. The book was selected by The Observer as one of the top ten books of the year.

German photographer Ilse Bing (1899-1998) has secured her place as one of the major photographers of the 20th century. Her pioneering images during the inter-war era reveal a modern vision influenced by the impact of both the Bauhaus and Surrealism. Alongside her personal work she produced images in the fields of photojournalism, architectural photography, advertising and fashion, and her work was published in the major magazines of the period and exhibited in France and Germany. She moved from Frankfurt to Paris in 1931 but when the city was t...

Bruce Gilden has never taken a break from his photography... Except once, in that miserable spring of 2020 when the first Covid attack took us prisoners. Stuck upstate New York with no assistant, and left with his Leica, his wife and a car, ‘lockdowned’ Bruce was going nuts. Late May, after the death of George Floyd, History came to the rescue with the massive protests springing out all over New York City. Bruce went to explore, driving back and forth to war zone Brooklyn and walking miles and miles on the street in pursuit of the rallies. Unti...

Ideal Home is an almost forensic photographic record of his sister’s north London suburban house. Working his way methodically around the house, Taylor documented the rooms, table tops, ornaments, interiors of fridges, cupboards, garden – as many aspects of the domestic interior of the home as possible - to create an extraordinary record of the ordinary. First published over thirty years ago in 1989, the book quickly began to influence photographers and students as to what was a suitable subject for an image, opening up the possibilities of ex...
