Leslie Jamison was born in Washington DC and grew up in Los Angeles. She has attended Harvard University, Iowa Writer's Workshop, and Yale University. Her novel, The Gin Closet, was a Los Angeles Times First Fiction Prize finalist and San Francisco Chronicle notable book of 2010. Jamison's New York Times bestselling essay collection, The Empathy Exams, was named a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Essay Collection of Spring 2014, New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice and Notable Book of 2014, and named a "Best Book" by NPR, Flavorwire, and Book Riot, and a "Book to Watch Out For" by the New Yorker. Her work has appeared in Harper's, Oxford American, A Public Space, Virginia Quarterly Review, and The Believer. Jamison is a columnist for the New York Times Book Review, and an Assistant Professor at Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn, with her family.
