Tundra Books
JUVENILE NONFICTION / Animals / Insects, Spiders, etc.
Hilarious illustrated non-fiction about cockroaches perfect for beginning readers. You’ll bug out over this perfect pairing of humorous text and funny illustrations about this insect that’s been around for over 335 million years!

Fast cockroach facts:

Distinctive trait: Flat and oval-shaped body

Diet: Everything! (Especially if it’s greasy and sweet…)

Special talent: Running

The Cockroach covers lifestyle (cockroaches prefer the dark and only come out during the day when their colonies get big enough), anatomy (cockroaches have wings but rarely fly), habitat (they prefer heat to cold), life cycle (a female can give birth to up to 350 babies during her lifetime) and much more. Although silly and off-the-wall, The Cockroach contains factual information that will both amuse and teach at the same time.

Series Overview: Each book in the Disgusting Critters series is a clever and very funny look at a particular insect or animal (fly, worm, slug, toad, head lice, rat, spider, bat and cockroach). The off-the-wall humor and fun, strangely adorable graphic approach by a Governor General’s Award - winning illustrator set this series apart from traditional non-fiction treatments.

HUMOR: Funny, cute, graphic-style art with easily digestible non-fiction content.

HUGE KID APPEAL: Kids love the gross and disgusting!

UNIQUE SERIES: There are 7 previously published titles (list on back) available in hardcover and trade paperback—collect them all! The books don’t need to be read in order, making this a flexible series.

DYNAMIC AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Award-winning author-illustrator whose profile continues to rise.

PERFECT FOR BEGINNING READERS: Easy-to-read text is ideal for newly independent readers.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: Life science, animals, language arts, early reading.

ELISE GRAVEL is an award-winning author-illustrator from Quebec. She has won a Governor General’s Award for Children’s Illustration in French, and is well known for her original, wacky picture books and graphic novels. After completing her studies in graphic design, Elise found herself quickly swept up into the glamorous world of illustration. Her old design habits drive her to work a little text here and there into her drawings and she loves to handle the design of her assignments from start to finish. She is inspired by social causes and likes projects that can handle a good dose of eccentricity.
